Canadian synthesist Loscil makes his long-awaited return to the Kranky label with a new LP entitled Lake Fire. Originally composed as a suite of movements for electronics and a bigger ensemble, Loscil eventually scrapped most of the idea (save for the haunting ‘Ash Clouds’ with features assistance from James Meager), instead remixing and reshaping the material into the album we have now. The fire imagery is deft, as Lake Fire is something like a phoenix rising from the ashes in and of itself. Field recordings from a trip to rural British Columbia creep into frame alongside Loscil’s treated digital and analog dispatches, while the evocative yet slightly out-of-focus cover art is also a snapshot of that influential journey.
